The Soweto Marimba Youth League, or ‘SMYLe’, is a community based youth development programme that employs musical instruction as a mechanism for supporting academic enrichment.
The project consists of more than 65 learners, of which as many as 32 can perform at any given community or corporate event, and the bands are built around a core set of marimbas, steel drums and African djembes.
With a repertoire of more than 500 songs, the music mix is as eclectic as the personalities involved in the project, and audiences never seem to tire of watching the kids play to their hearts’ content.
SMYLe works to support choirs from the Ethembini Drop-In Centre and Orlando Children’s Home, providing opportunities for other talented youth to demonstrate the rich musical talent that is inherent in the culture of Soweto.
SMYLe will be performing a ‘pre-concert’ at SABC’s benefit concert for Haiti Disaster Relief (M.A.D. 4 Haiti) at Carnival City on Sunday the 21st of March, from 11h00 to 12h10.
